After a two week trip backpacking through Sri Lanka, we decided to go to the beach and chill for a couple of days. We weren’t sure where to stay but as luck has it, we probably found the best place to stay in Mount Lavinia.
And that’s Villasunshine Colombo.
Mount Lavinia is a beach town situated 10km North of Colombo. Because it’s so close to Colombo, and the airport, it’s a very attractive and common destination for the start or end of your trip to Sri Lanka.
And that’s exactly what we did. We stayed in Mount Lavinia the first night we landed in Sri Lanka and the last four nights before flying back to the UK.
The location of Villasunshine
Situate 200 metres to the beach, it’s a 5 minute walk to the nearest patch of sand.
It’s also in a quiet neighbourhood so no worries about tuk tuks making loud noises or traffic sounds.
Unmatched price of the guest house in Colombo
Let me give you a bit of context for this one.
When we first landed in Colombo we had one day to spend there before moving on to Kandi.
So we looked online and found Colombo Beach Hostel for quite a reasonable price – 4000 LKR (Sri Lankan Rupees) that’s £19.
Decided to book it for one night just so we have somewhere to sleep.
The room was a private double bedroom with en-suite. Simple and cheap.
Very basic room, like literally: bathroom wasn’t even painted.
It was just concrete.
And a bed.
Can’t really argue for that price and it was, again, 200 m from the beach.
Now let’s go back to Villasunshine.
It’s around the corner from the hostel and we paid the same price!!!!
There’s no comparison between the two.
In the UK you would pay around £100 a night (minimum) to stay in a place like Villasunshine and £10 for somewhere like Colombo Beach Hostel.
Just shows what a bit of research can do for you.
The rooms at Villasunshine in Colombo
The guest house itself is glorious. Unbelievably clean and has a vintage feel to it.
Every morning the manager cleaned the house.
The entire house.
Then, when we came back from lounging on the beach all day sipping fresh pineapple juice with tiny umbrellas, the man was still working in the garden trimming the grass around the edges.
To his credit, Villasunshine probably has the best garden in Colombo.
The manager lived in the house with his son.
Such nice people, you wouldn’t believe.
I got seafood poisoning one day and they made me tea and went to the pharmacy with my boyfriend to buy me some medicine. Great people and I am happy I had a chance to meet them.
To be honest, they are the reason I decided to write the review. The house is great, but the people make it the best choice for accommodation in Mount Lavinia.
If you do decide to book you can contact them directly via Facebook. They removed their Airbnb listing cause they ended up loosing money because of the conversion rate.
You won’t regret it.
